The country code for Malta is 356. There are 241,100 land line telephone subscriptions in Malta and 385,600 mobile cellular subscriptions. In total this makes 150 telephone subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.

Interntationally, Malta is connected to Europe (Italy) with two submarine communication cables. In addition to this there is a satelite earth station (1 Intelsat (Atlantic Ocean), 2008) to connect Malta to the world.

Domestic communication is provided by a combination of submarine cable and microwave radio relay between the islands.

There are four internet providers in Malta. As of 2008, there were 198,800 internet users in Malta. Internet in Malta is available both through coax cable, ADSL and 3G Internet.

The country code top-level domain for Malta is .mt. The ccTLD is maintained by Network Information Centre Malta (NIC Malta/ NIC-MT).

The Malta Internet eXchange (MIX) is the backbone of the Maltese internet infrastructure. It was launched by NIC Malta in cooperation with the major internet service providers on the island in September 1999. The internet exchange facility is located at the University of Malta Computing Services Centre. NIC Malta provides technical support for the internet exchange in close cooperation with the University of Malta.

The Malta Internet eXchange provides a backbone to route the traffic among the Internet Service Providers (ISP) operating within the Maltese islands. This is valid for country-internal traffic only. Traffic from/ to sites outside the Maltese islands will never traverse the MIX network and will be routed through the international connection of the individual ISPs.

There is one airport in Malta: Malta International Airport.The airport is located between Luqa and Gudja. The airport is located 5 km southwest of the capital Valletta. The airport serves as the hub for Air Malta, but many other airlines has routes to Malta.

Harbour Air Malta operates a daily floatplane service from Valletta Harbour (Valletta Waterfront) to Mgarr Harbour on Gozo.

There is a total of 2,227 km of roadway in Malta our of which 2,014 is paved. The roads are generally in good condition. The main mode of transportaion in Malta is by car. In Malta you drive on the left. Maltese drivers are notorious for being of the worst in Europe, but accident rates are the lowest in the Union.

As of 2008, there are 1,438 registered vessels in Malta. This makes the merchant marine in Malta the fourth largest in the world. The majority of the registered vessels are owned by foreign companies. The number of vessels owned by foreign companies in 2008 was 1,343.

Malta Freeport
There are two ports in Malta, one in Valletta and one in Maraxlokk (Malta Freeport).The Freeport cargo terminal handles about 1,2 million containers per year. Malta Freeport lies to the west of Marsaxlokk. The cranes of the port is an impressive sight from accross the bay.
